The Importance of Well-being in the Workplace

Over the past few years, the term 'Wellbeing in the Workplace' is becoming increasingly more prevalent in conversations about business, between business operators. To say it should have always been a priority consideration is an understatement. In my experience, defining and understanding wellbeing and what it means for your staff individually and your industry or company culture, is essential to building effective resources and infrastructure to facilitate meaningful support to your workers.

I feel it is crucial to evaluate the health of the company culture through the wellbeing lens first, as this directly affects the wellbeing of the people working in that organisation. Our Health and Safety laws and regulations outline compliance requirements needed to ensure a workplace should adequately protect workers from stressors and risk in this space, however it is important to note that an individual's overall wellbeing extends beyond the workplace.

For this reason, a communicative, open, inclusive and engaged approach is fundamental for positive outcomes of any initiatives involving the mental, physical or emotional state of people. I continue to advise those I work with, that there is not a one size fits all plan when it comes to wellbeing in the workplace, it is certainly an area where drawing on wellness professionals and third-party external advisors and providers can be very helpful in designing initiatives and support that works best for your business and staff.
